In January 2021, at a most unlikely time and when our world was shaded by chaos, a light of hope sparked inside me. Once nurtured, it became a clear idea, and a steady, persistent beacon that guided me through all the challenges of starting a business. When a vision comes, it is difficult to turn away from it. For me, it proved to be impossible.
Looming ahead was a deadline of six months before opening my doors. What doors? Where? I needed a business plan. I needed a loan. A website, insurance, phone, security services, contractor. I needed furniture, window blinds, signs, marketing materials…and the list went on and on.
Certain challenges were met with what would become a mantra for me, “Well, hire someone who knows how to do it!” However, I soon learned not all so-called experts are created equal. Though I trusted the universe to guide me to the perfect person for every job, instead there were some significant life lessons in store for me. The formidable challenge reared its hair-pulling head to fire my “expert contractor.” Right in the middle of the job, and only two weeks away from opening day. With no other available contractor in sight! Stressed? I had never fired anyone in my life. But apparently, with the more benign powers of synchronicity at work, it all went off fairly smoothly.
Before I could catch my breath, another of the universe’s life lessons presented itself. My “business plan expert” was nodding off at the wheel and I needed to take over. He was not pleased. I rewrote the whole plan and insisted my standards were met, and became–gulp–directive. I didn’t know I could be like that!
In finalizing my loan papers, my “expert Notary Public” nightmare was thankfully washed away with the kind and excellent guidance from Kelly at Community Futures of Central Island.
